Mount Gravatt Lookout

Mount Gravatt Lookout is one of Queensland’s most popular attractions to both locals and tourists. Aside from the amazing view of the city and nature, the lookout has several hiking tracks and walking trails from Griffith University Mount Gravatt Campus to Toohey Forest Park that people can take where you might see a koala (or more!). The lookout is a part of Toohey Forest Park which is about 260 hectares located south of Brisbane CBD (Central Business District).

A number of trees have been planted around the lookout, including large specimen pines, but the original view is now obscured by these trees. Cyclists can ride up the road to the lookout on clear days while other tourists can drive up the lookout as it has sufficient parking lots available. The road’s a bit narrow though so take care driving up as cyclists take the same road. After basking in its spectacular view, you can sit and relax at the lookout’s cafe, or take photos at the cafe deck. Other recommended places to visit around Mount Gravatt Lookout are the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park which is about a 20-minute drive away, as well as Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre if you have kids in tow. If you didn’t get a glimpse of the koalas at the lookout, you can visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary instead. Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-Tha is a must too if you’d love to see and learn more about plants. There are also various restaurants and cafes around the area such as Goodness Gracious Cafe, Loving Hut Brisbane, Hallowed Grounds Espresso Cafe, and Lovewell.

Mount Gravatt Outlook Reserve is an ideal place for hiking and picnicking as well as a popular destination for families, hikers and nature lovers. Taking pictures of the stunning views of the city, the lookout is surrounded by lush vegetation and beautiful nature. It’s a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the fresh air and scenery. The lookout is open daily from 6 am to 7 pm (closes at 8:30 pm on Fridays to Saturdays). It changes depending on weather conditions though. It’s best to visit the lookout in spring or summer as it’s the best weather to go on walks. You might even be lucky enough to see pretty birds and colourful butterflies while you’re at it so when visiting the lookout, you should not forget to bring along your camera. There are many interesting places that you can capture at Mt Gravatt Lookout and you will find a number of beautiful plants and flowers too!

Before you go, keep in mind that the summit tracks of Mt Gravatt Lookout are labelled as moderate as some trails can be steep and narrow. One of the tracks leads to Gertrude Petty Place which is one of the picnic areas within the lookout. If you’re planning to take the track, don’t forget to bring a water bottle (or two) as the trail’s 1000m long. Pets are allowed as long as they’re kept on a leash and taking them on a walk could help them get their energy down.
